English

Background: Excessive consumption of war-related media content often leads to severe adverse psychological outcomes, including heightened anxiety, chronic stress, and the significant exacerbation of behavioral problems. The present study aimed to develop and validate the War‑Related Media Consumption Scale in a sample of Iranian university students during the 2025–2026 academic year.
Methods: This applied study employed a correlational–psychometric design. The statistical population comprised students at Payame Noor University of Yazd, from whom 420 individuals were selected using convenience sampling. The research instruments included the researcher‑developed War‑Related Media Consumption Scale, the Ruminative Response Scale (McEvoy, 2010), and the Hope Scale (Snyder, 1991). Data were analyzed using exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses, the Kaiser–Meyer–Olkin (KMO) measure of sampling adequacy, Bartlett’s test of sphericity, Cronbach’s alpha, and Pearson correlation coefficients, implemented in SPSS version 26 and AMOS version 24.
Results: Exploratory factor analysis indicated that the scale comprises 10 items loading on a single factor, accounting for 61.687% of the total variance. Confirmatory factor analysis further supported the adequacy and goodness‑of‑fit of the one‑factor model (RMSEA = 0.028, GFI = 0.947, CFI = 0.965, TLI = 0.951). Convergent validity was established by a significant positive correlation with rumination (r = 0.517), and divergent validity was supported by a significant negative correlation with hope (r = −0.250). In addition, the total scale demonstrated excellent internal consistency, with a Cronbach’s alpha coefficient of 0.93.
Conclusion: Overall, the results underscore that the War-Related Media Consumption Scale demonstrates robust psychometric indices. As such, this tool serves as a reliable instrument for identifying at-risk students and formulating tailored educational and psychological interventions.
