English

Background: Fear of aging is a multifaceted construct involving cognitive, experiential, and biological factors that may lead to significant psychological distress during specific stages of life.
Methods: This psychometric study employed a descriptive-correlational design. A total of 359 adults aged 45–60 years from Zanjan, Iran, were recruited through convenience sampling. Participants completed Gerascophobia Scale (Excessive Fear of Aging), the Depression, Anxiety, and Stress Scale (DASS), and the Death Anxiety Scale. Reliability was evaluated using Cronbach’s alpha and test–retest methods. Content validity was assessed both qualitatively and quantitatively through expert review, while construct validity was examined using confirmatory factor analysis. Convergent validity was investigated through correlations with depression, anxiety, stress, and death anxiety.
Results: The findings demonstrated satisfactory psychometric performance of the scale. Test–retest reliability, assessed in a subsample of 38 participants over a one-week interval, yielded a correlation coefficient of 0.81, indicating good temporal stability. Internal consistency was acceptable, with a Cronbach’s alpha coefficient of 0.82. Significant item–total correlations supported item validity. Content validity was confirmed, as all items achieved Content Validity Ratio (CVR) values above 0.80 and Content Validity Index (CVI) values above 0.90. Evidence for convergent validity was obtained through significant positive correlations between fear of aging and depression (r = 0.27), anxiety (r = 0.35), stress (r = 0.33), and death anxiety (r = 0.37). Confirmatory factor analysis further supported the proposed factor structure and construct validity of the instrument.
Conclusion: The Excessive Fear of Aging Scale demonstrated satisfactory reliability and validity and can be used to assess excessive fear of aging among Iranian adults.
